Weight Lifting Equipment Basics

 

Barbell Weight Lifting Equipment is not the easiest thing to come by. It is not as simple as just running out and buying a bunch of weights, attaching them to some sort of pulley system, and you’re off and working your way to a lean toned body. You see, weight lifting equipment comes with a bunch of different options that most people don’t even think about before they make the decision to start working out. Here are some of the most important things to consider when purchasing a piece of weight lifting equipment:

* Dumbbells – One of the most important pieces of weight lifting equipment is the dumbbells. While many people think of dumbbells as being large and bulky, they are not. In fact, a pair of quality dumbbells can be just as effective in building up your shoulder muscles as a treadmill, or even a stationary bike. The best dumbbells are ones that have a huge range of motion, are comfortable in your hands, and that allow you to use more weight than you believe you can handle. Also, keep in mind that if you do decide to purchase dumbbells, it is a good idea to buy ones that have a lot of weight on the end, so that you can easily make a “swing” move while keeping the weight on the ends. You will also need a bench for your dumbbells that has at least a two-inch stabilizer to help ensure that the weight stays on the ends.

* Sets of Dumbbells – While the sets of dumbbells you get will obviously vary depending on what you want to do, they should all have the same number of weight. One set should ideally be around 80 pounds, although heavier dumbbells are better for some exercises. For the exercises that use more than one set, each set should not exceed one pound. If you want more than one set, obviously you’ll need a pair of weighted dumbbells that have more weight.

* Dumbbell Stands and Bars – Just like with dumbbells, you need to have stands for your dumbbells, or benches for your barbells. The stands should be fairly sturdy, and they should be adjustable to hold different sizes of dumbbells. Most gyms will not allow you to use home equipment unless you either get a full-fledged membership, pay an annual fee, or agree to special terms and conditions regarding the use of their equipment. If you’re serious about bodybuilding, getting a barbell and a bench are absolutely essential to get started.

* A Vending Machine – While you may think that these aren’t considered weight lifting equipment, they come in handy when you want to have the time of your life working out in the privacy of your own home. These machines give you the ability to do many different kinds of exercises without having to leave your house. Most home gyms have one that will allow multiple dumbbell sets, bars, and stands. However, if your home gym is limited to just a few machines, you can purchase a cheap vending machine and use it as a substitute for those other pieces of equipment. The only thing you’ll need to do is make sure that it holds the amount of weight you’re bringing with you when you go out.

Now that you know the basics of weight lifting equipment, it’s time to decide what type of exercise you’d like to do. For starters, if you want to build up your bulk, you can use free weights as well as machines to target various muscles. Machines work on single muscles at a time, while free weights allow you to perform targeted exercises on several different muscles at once. Don’t limit yourself to one method, though. Both weight lifting equipment and free weights can help you build and tone your muscles.
